Accra Hearts of Oak’s goalkeeper, Benjamin Asare, has made a compelling case for the inclusion of local players in the Ghanaian national team. The 32-year-old shot-stopper, who recently earned his first call-up to the Black Stars, believes that homegrown talent deserves opportunities to shine on the international stage if they prove their worth.

Asare’s advocacy follows his outstanding performances in Ghana’s recent World Cup qualifiers against Chad and Madagascar. The veteran goalkeeper kept two clean sheets, helping the Black Stars secure six crucial points and extend their lead at the top of the group standings. Despite only receiving his first national team call-up at 32, Asare’s perseverance and dedication have finally paid off, making him an integral part of the squad.

In an exclusive interview with 3Sport’s Mutala Yakubu in Morocco, the former Great Olympics goalkeeper expressed his gratitude for the trust placed in him and emphasized the importance of recognizing local talent.

“I am happy with the confidence they have in me and the support. I am glad I lived up to expectations. If a local player is good, he deserves a platform,” Asare stated. “Sometimes people think that once you are a local player, getting into the national team will be difficult, but we are very determined.”

Ghana has a rich history of producing exceptional local players, including renowned goalkeepers such as Richard Kingson, George Owu, and Sammy Adjei. Asare’s rise serves as a reminder that the Ghana Premier League continues to nurture top-tier talent capable of competing at the highest level.

As Ghana’s World Cup qualifying campaign progresses, Asare’s experience and leadership will be vital for the team. His journey from the local league to the national stage serves as an inspiration to young players, demonstrating that with determination and hard work, their dreams are within reach.

As his career flourishes, football fans across Ghana will be closely following Asare’s journey, hopeful that he will continue to make a significant impact on the Black Stars.
