Black Queens Slip to 67th in Latest FIFA Rankings, Retain 6th Spot in Africa Despite WAFCON Bronze

The Black Queens of Ghana have dropped one place to 67th in the latest FIFA Women’s World Rankings, despite an impressive showing at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).

The August update, released by FIFA on Thursday, saw Ghana fall from 66th to 67th globally. However, the team maintains its 6th position in Africa, underlining its continued relevance on the continental stage.

Strong WAFCON Performance

Led by head coach Kim Lars Björkegren, the Black Queens delivered one of their best performances in recent years at the WAFCON tournament, held in Morocco last month. The team secured a third-place finish, claiming the bronze medal after defeating South Africa’s Banyana Banyana in the third-place playoff.

This marked a significant milestone as Ghana made its return to the tournament for the first time since 2018 and finished on the podium.

Mixed Results in Morocco

While the Black Queens impressed overall, they suffered two defeats during the competition:

  • A group stage loss to eventual finalists South Africa

  • A semifinal defeat to hosts Morocco, who edged Ghana out of contention for the final

Despite these setbacks, the team rebounded strongly to end the campaign on a high note with the bronze medal.

    Continental Standing Intact

On the African front, Ghana remains 6th in the CAF women’s rankings, behind Nigeria, South Africa, Morocco, Cameroon, and Zambia. The steady positioning reflects the team’s progress under new leadership and signals growing competitiveness on the continental stage.

    Looking Ahead

With renewed momentum and a strong core of players, the Black Queens will now set their sights on qualifiers for upcoming international tournaments, including the next Olympic Games and World Cup cycle.
