Ghana’s Black Stars have taken a step forward in the latest FIFA rankings, rising to 76th place globally while maintaining their 14th position in Africa. This marks their first ranking improvement since July 2024, when they made a significant leap from 64th to 60th.
The past year had been challenging for the Black Stars, as they endured a sharp decline in rankings. A disappointing AFCON qualification campaign saw them drop from 73rd to 77th by November 2024. Key setbacks included a home loss to Angola and a draw against Niger in Morocco, leading to a six-place dip in September. The struggles continued in October with a goalless draw against Sudan and a 2-0 defeat in the reverse fixture, resulting in another three-place drop. Under coach Otto Addo, Ghana finished 2024 in 77th place—far from their 61st ranking in November 2023.
However, the tide appears to be turning. A strong start to 2025 has helped Ghana regain some ground, with back-to-back victories over Chad and Madagascar in the 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers. These crucial wins pushed the Black Stars above Israel, who slipped two spots in the rankings.
Despite this progress, Ghana remains just 13 points away from its worst-ever FIFA ranking of 89th. Nonetheless, this recent upturn offers hope, and coach Otto Addo will be eager to build on the momentum in upcoming international fixtures. The Black Stars now set their sights on further improvement, aiming to reclaim their place among Africa’s elite football nations.
