Filippo Inzaghi Appointed Palermo Boss After Leading Pisa to Promotion

Filippo Inzaghi has been officially appointed as the new head coach of Serie B side Palermo, just weeks after leading Pisa to promotion to Serie A.

The 51-year-old former Italy striker parted ways with Pisa by mutual agreement on Friday, despite a successful campaign that saw the club finish second in Serie B and secure a return to the top flight for the first time in 34 years. His impressive achievement came in his debut season with the Tuscan club.

On Tuesday, Palermo confirmed Inzaghi’s arrival on a multi-year contract as the Sicilian outfit aims to rebuild after finishing eighth last season and falling short in the opening round of the promotion play-offs.

Palermo, who haven’t played in Serie A since 2017, are part of the global City Football Group — the same ownership group that oversees Manchester City — and are looking to tap into Inzaghi’s proven track record in the Italian lower leagues to mount a serious push for promotion.

A legendary figure in Italian football, Inzaghi enjoyed a glittering playing career with Juventus and AC Milan, winning two Serie A titles and two Champions League trophies. He was also part of Italy’s 2006 World Cup-winning squad.

Since transitioning to management, Inzaghi has developed a reputation for guiding clubs to success. He began his coaching career with AC Milan in 2014, shortly after retiring as a player. He later led Venezia to promotion from Serie C in 2017 and took Benevento into Serie A in 2020.

Despite his success, Inzaghi has never remained at a club for more than two consecutive seasons. His move to Palermo also coincides with a major development in his family — his younger brother, Simone Inzaghi, recently left Inter Milan to take over as head coach of Saudi Pro League giants Al-Hilal.

Now at the helm of Palermo, Filippo Inzaghi faces the challenge of restoring one of Italy’s most historic clubs to the heights of Serie A. With promotion experience under his belt and a multi-year vision ahead, the Rosanero faithful will be hoping he can deliver once more.
