Liverpool are edging closer to completing the blockbuster signing of Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen, with negotiations at an advanced stage over a deal that could reach £114 million.
The Reds submitted their third formal offer last week, comprising £100 million guaranteed and an additional £14 million in performance-based add-ons. If finalized, the transfer would break Liverpool’s existing club-record fee of £75 million, paid for Virgil van Dijk in 2018.
Sources have told BBC Sport that discussions are now centered on the structure of the deal, particularly the realistic nature of the add-ons and payment terms. Leverkusen are believed to value the 22-year-old playmaker at around £126 million, but are open to closing the gap depending on the final bonus clauses.
🇩🇪 Wirtz Favors Anfield Switch
Despite strong interest from both Manchester City and Bayern Munich, Wirtz has reportedly made Anfield his preferred destination. The German international is said to be enthusiastic about playing under Liverpool’s new era and contributing to their rebuilding phase.
Wirtz has been a standout performer since breaking into the Leverkusen first team at just 17 years old, amassing 57 goals in 197 appearances. He was instrumental in Leverkusen’s historic 2024 Bundesliga title win and remains one of Europe’s most coveted young talents.
On the international stage, he has made 31 appearances for Germany, scoring seven goals since his debut in 2021.
🤝 Not the First Leverkusen Link This Summer
Should the deal go through, Wirtz would become Liverpool’s second signing from Bayer Leverkusen this summer. The club has already secured Jeremie Frimpong, the Dutch full-back, for a reported £34 million earlier in the window.
The potential addition of Wirtz underscores Liverpool’s ambitious transfer strategy as they look to reshape their squad and return to title contention both domestically and in Europe.
