Bruno Fernandes Rejects Lucrative Al-Hilal Offer to Remain at Manchester United
Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has turned down a substantial offer from Saudi Pro League giants Al-Hilal, choosing to stay at Old Trafford despite the prospect of a significant salary increase.
The Portuguese midfielder, who is currently one of United’s highest earners, spent several days seriously weighing up the proposal. The deal on the table from Al-Hilal would have more than doubled his current wages. However, after careful discussions with his family, Fernandes made the decision to reject the move and informed the Saudi club of his intentions.
Fernandes is expected to address the situation publicly on Tuesday during a pre-match press conference in Germany, ahead of Portugal’s UEFA Nations League semi-final clash on Wednesday.
Manchester United are said to be very pleased with the outcome, which reinforces Fernandes’ commitment to the club at a time when they are seeking stability and leadership. Head coach Ruben Amorim had expressed confidence last week that the 30-year-old would continue his journey at Old Trafford.
Notably, there were no direct negotiations between Manchester United and Al-Hilal, and the Premier League club was never officially presented with a bid. Reports indicated that Al-Hilal was prepared to submit an offer in the region of £80 million to £100 million, with hopes of securing Fernandes ahead of this month’s Club World Cup.
With Fernandes opting to stay, it remains uncertain whether Al-Hilal will now shift their focus to alternative targets.
Since arriving from Sporting Lisbon for £47 million in January 2020, Fernandes has become a cornerstone of Manchester United’s midfield. He has made 290 appearances and scored 98 goals in all competitions, earning the armband and the admiration of fans and teammates alike.
Former United defender and Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville commented on the situation, saying that while the transfer might not have been a bad deal financially for United, Fernandes’ decision to stay demonstrates deep character.
“He’s so important,” Neville said. “The fact that he wants to stay and go through this tough period instead of walking away speaks volumes. It would’ve been easy for him to say, ‘I’m done,’ especially with the club at one of its lowest points. But to turn down that kind of money and show he’s willing to fight through, to achieve something with this club—that’s the mentality United need.”
Neville added, “The club needs people who are going to run through a brick wall for them. Bruno’s choice will only endear him further to the fans.”
