2025 Ras Al Khaimah Half Marathon: Fast times expected in U.A.E

The 18th edition of the Ras Al Khaimah Half Marathon takes place this Saturday, February 1, with fast times expected once again in the United Arab Emirates.

In the elite men’s field, Kenya’s Isaia Lasoi, who placed third at last year’s event, will be confident of finishing higher on the podium, especially after setting a new personal best of 58:10 at the 2024 Copenhagen Half Marathon.

That makes him the fastest man in this year’s RAK Half field and it’s also a time that’s 40 seconds quicker than his third place finish 12 months ago.

He will be joined on the start line by Ethiopians Adamlak Belihu [58:54] – a two-time winner of the New Delhi Half Marathon – and Gemechu Dida [58:59], who finished fourth at the Rak Half in 2023.

Watch out for Kenya’s Nicholas Kipkorir [59:02] as well, given he is a Commonwealth Games 5000m silver medallist and placed fourth over the distance at the Tokyo Olympics.

In the elite women’s field, Ethiopians Girmawit Gebrzihair and Ejgayehu Taye – tied on half marathon bests of 64:14 – will be the leading contenders.

Gebrzihair established her personal best when setting the RAK Half course record three years ago, while Taye recorded the same time when finishing fourth on her half marathon debut in Valencia last season.

Taye, who is a world 10,000m bronze medallist and secured the same colour medal over 5km at the 2023 World Road Running Championships, is focused on a record-breaking run in the Gulf on Saturday.

Kenya’s Judy Kemboi (65:43) is a relative newcomer to international road racing, but she did win three consecutive half marathons last year in Gent, Geneva and Riga respectively.

As well as the elites, thousands of people are expected to take part in the 2km, 5km, and 10km and 21km races on Saturday.

All four distances start and finish on Al Marjan Island, with athletes of all ages and abilities racing.

The Runner’s Village will provide an estimated 10,000 people with a children’s play zone, radio broadcasts, food and beverage, a DJ and live music, to keep athletes and spectators entertained throughout the morning.

In addition, a 500-seat grandstand has been constructed, allowing friends and family to support the runners as they cross the finish line and collect their medals.

Iyad Rasbey, Vice President of Destination Tourism Development at Ras Al Khaimah Tourism Development Authority, said: “Ras Al Khaimah continues to excel as a premier destination for nature, adventure, and sporting events. With the highest number of participants expected this year, the 18th edition of the RAK Half Marathon highlights the growth and strong community focus of our emirate.

“Sport tourism, a cornerstone of our growth strategy, not only stimulates local businesses but also enhances the liveability of our community by fostering healthier, happier lifestyles. We look forward to welcoming professional athletes, families, and running enthusiasts alike, and we wish everyone participating the best of luck!”
