Jerry Afriyie earns late Black Stars call-up ahead of Mexico Friendly

The 19-year-old attacker was not included in the initial squad announced by head coach Carlos Queiroz but has now linked up with the team earlier than expected, giving the technical handlers an opportunity to closely assess him ahead of the final squad announcement for the FIFA World Cup 2026.

Afriyie joins camp after an encouraging loan spell with RAAL La Louvière in the Belgian Pro League during the 2025/2026 season. The young striker featured in 31 league matches, scoring five goals and registering one assist in what proved to be a valuable development campaign.

His consistent performances appear to have caught the attention of the new Black Stars technical team as Ghana intensify preparations for the global tournament set to be hosted in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

The friendly clash against Mexico on Friday, May 22, is expected to serve as an important test for the Black Stars, especially for players seeking to secure places in the final World Cup squad. For Afriyie, the game presents a major opportunity to prove his quality against strong opposition and stake a claim for selection.

Ghana have been drawn into a difficult World Cup group featuring England national football team, Croatia national football team and Panama national football team, making every preparatory match crucial for the coaching staff.

Afriyie is expected to step in for Augustine Boakye and Francis Amuzu, who are both set to miss the camp due to club commitments.

With competition for places intensifying, the young striker now has a golden chance to impress and potentially force his way into Ghana’s plans for the 2026 World Cup.
