CAF Champions League: GoldStars Captain Yakubu Haqq Stresses Importance of Preparation Ahead of Historic Campaign
Bibiani GoldStars captain Yakubu Haqq has underlined the critical role of thorough preparation as the club gets ready for its first-ever CAF Champions League appearance.
GoldStars secured their place in Africa’s most prestigious club competition after clinching the Ghana Premier League title for the first time in their history last season — a landmark achievement for the Western North-based side.
In an interview with GistSports, the experienced 30-year-old defender emphasized the challenge that lies ahead as they prepare to face the champions of other African nations.
“It’s a tough task, which you need to prepare very well for,” Haqq said. “Because we, being champions in Ghana, are going to face champions elsewhere.”
Haqq noted that the intensity and focus of this year’s pre-season is already beyond what he has witnessed in previous years at the club.
“So each game you’re in, you need to tell yourself you’re playing against a champion. That’s why this time, our preparation is ahead of the previous seasons I know of GoldStars.”
Squad Reinforcements and Internal Competition
GoldStars have been proactive in the transfer market, bringing in at least ten new players across various positions, with more signings expected before their continental campaign kicks off.
According to Haqq, the increased competition within the squad is driving higher standards in training.
“This season’s signings cover all departments. The new guys are responding very well, which has made things very competitive — and that’s good,” he explained.
“If everyone is competing, it means if you don’t give your best, it will be hard for you to even get playing time. So those who are around are competing very well.”
Looking Ahead
GoldStars are expected to find out their CAF Champions League preliminary round opponents on August 12, as the Confederation of African Football prepares to conduct the official draw.
With preparations well underway and squad depth improving, the club is aiming not just to make an appearance, but to make an impact on the continental stage.
