Mbappé Double Fires Real Madrid to Sixth Straight Win
Kylian Mbappé scored twice as La Liga leaders Real Madrid extended their perfect start to the season with a commanding victory away at Levante.
With the score at 2-1, the French forward struck twice in the space of two minutes to seal Real’s sixth consecutive league win, moving them five points clear of Barcelona at the summit.
Mbappé’s first came from the penalty spot in the 64th minute, as he coolly chipped home a cheeky ‘Panenka’ past Levante goalkeeper Mathew Ryan. Moments later, he added his second of the night with a composed finish after being played through by Arda Güler — taking his tally to seven league goals this season.
Earlier, Vinícius Júnior opened the scoring with a moment of brilliance, bending a stunning effort into the far corner with the outside of his boot from a tight angle. The Brazilian then turned provider, setting up Franco Mastantuono with a sweeping crossfield ball that the 18-year-old converted with a thunderous strike into the top corner. It was Mastantuono’s first goal for the club, making him the fourth-youngest scorer in Real Madrid’s La Liga history.
Levante briefly threatened a comeback when Ivan Romero’s cross was headed home at the back post by Etta Eyong, but Mbappé’s quickfire brace put the result beyond doubt.
The win means head coach Xabi Alonso becomes only the second manager in Real Madrid’s history to win his first six La Liga matches. He now has the chance to equal Vanderlei Luxemburgo’s record of seven straight victories at the start of his reign when Real face city rivals Atlético Madrid in the derby on Saturday.
Barcelona, meanwhile, will have the opportunity to cut the gap when they travel to Oviedo on Thursday.
