The Minnesota Timberwolves paused for a solemn moment of silence before their NBA game on Thursday night to honour Renee Good, whose death earlier in the week has reverberated through the Minneapolis community amid rising tensions over immigration enforcement.
Good, a 37-year-old woman, was fatally shot by an officer from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) during a brief confrontation in Minneapolis on Wednesday morning, just a few miles from the Timberwolves’ Target Center arena. The incident, and the subsequent unrest it has sparked across the Twin Cities, was described by Wolves head coach Chris Finch before tipoff as “yet another unspeakable tragedy” for the local community.
Players from both the Timberwolves and the visiting Cleveland Cavaliers stood at midcourt prior to the game as the arena fell into respectful silence. Fans and team officials used the moment to reflect on the loss and convey condolences to Good’s family and loved ones. Finch offered heartfelt wishes and prayers during his pregame remarks, emphasising the deep impact events have had on the broader community.
The shooting has also reignited protests in Minneapolis and the surrounding region, where critics of increased ICE activity have raised concerns over the circumstances of the encounter and broader immigration policies.
The Timberwolves’ tribute marked a brief but poignant pause before the high-energy contest, with the gesture aimed at acknowledging grief and promoting unity in a moment of collective reflection.
