Mary Moraa bounced back from her defeat at the Olympics at the hands of Keely Hodgkinson to clock a world best for 600m with 1:21.63 at the ISTAF meeting in Berlin on Sunday, September 1.
The Kenyan athlete beat the mark of Caster Semenya, which was also set in Berlin in 2017, by 14 hundredths of a second in front of a crowd of more than 40,000.
“I am feeling so well and happy,” said Moraa. “To achieve this record on the first attempt is just overwhelming. I am so satisfied about the way I ran today.”
Olympic finalist Shafiqua Maloney was runner-up in 1:22.98, the sixth fastest time in history.
Elsewhere, Sam Kendricks cleared 6.01m in the pole vault before three attempts at a US record height of 6.08m.
Gina Luckenkemper delighted the German fans by winning the women’s 100m in 10.93, whereas another local favourite, Gesa Felicitas Krause, won the 2000m steeplechase in 5:56.71 and Julian Weber won the javelin with a season’s best of 88.64m.
