Ghana to host 2027 U-20 Africa Cup of Nations after nearly three decades

Kurt Okraku, President of the Ghana Football Association, has confirmed that Ghana will host the 2027 U-20 Africa Cup of Nations, marking a major milestone for the country’s football development agenda.

The announcement was made on April 26, 2026, through Kurt Okraku’s official Facebook page, sparking excitement among football fans and stakeholders across the country.

The hosting rights represent a significant vote of confidence in Ghana’s ability to organize major continental competitions and further strengthens the nation’s standing as one of Africa’s leading football hubs.

It will be the first time in nearly 30 years that Ghana hosts the prestigious youth tournament, having last staged the competition in 1999. That edition remains one of the most memorable moments in Ghana’s football history, as the Ghana national under-20 football team, popularly known as the Black Satellites, captured the title on home soil in front of jubilant supporters.

Ghana last hosted the competition in 1999 – when the Black Satellites lifted the trophy on home soil amid scenes of national celebration. Coincidentally, 2027 will mark the 70th Independence anniversary and the competition could be a great part of the celebrations.

The U-20 Africa Cup of Nations has long served as a launching pad for some of Africa’s brightest football talents, with many players using the tournament as a stepping stone to successful careers in Europe and on the global stage.

Ghana’s hosting of the 2027 edition is therefore expected to shine a spotlight on the country’s football culture while offering a platform for the next generation of stars to emerge.

Beyond football, the tournament is projected to have a positive impact on Ghana’s economy, with increased tourism, business activity, and infrastructure development expected in the lead-up to the event. Improvements to stadiums, training facilities, transportation networks, and hospitality services could leave a lasting legacy long after the competition concludes.

Specific host cities, venues, and official dates are yet to be announced by Confederation of African Football, but anticipation is already building as preparations begin.

Ghana enters the hosting role with an impressive pedigree at this level. The Black Satellites are one of Africa’s most successful youth sides, having won the continental title four times, most recently in 2021. With rich history, passionate support, and a proud tradition of nurturing young talent, Ghana now has another opportunity to showcase its football excellence to the rest of the continent in 2027.
