New Ghana national football team head coach Carlos Queiroz has handed a major boost to locally based players, revealing plans to closely monitor the Black Galaxies as he builds his squad for the 2026 World Cup.

Speaking at his unveiling at the Alisa Hotel, the Portuguese tactician disclosed that time is limited and he has already requested the Ghana Football Association to assemble a home-based team for an upcoming international friendly against Mexico national football team.

Currently, about 35 players are in camp under coach Kassim Ocansey, preparing for the friendly scheduled for May 22.

Players such as Benjamin Asare and Salim Adams are expected to feature, as they push to impress and secure spots in the Black Stars squad.

Queiroz, who has previously managed top clubs and national teams including Real Madrid CF, Manchester United, the Portugal national football team, and the Iran national football team, will lead Ghana into the 2026 FIFA World Cup in Canada, Mexico, and the United States.

The 73-year-old boasts extensive World Cup experience, having guided the South Africa national football team to qualification for the 2002 FIFA World Cup, led Portugal to the knockout stage in 2010, and managed Iran at the 2014 and 2018 editions.

He has also coached the Egypt national football team, Oman national football team, Japan national football team, and Qatar national football team.

Queiroz is expected to begin preparations immediately for the tournament, which kicks off on June 11, 2026. Ghana will open their campaign against the Panama national football team on June 17 in Toronto, before facing the England national football team and the Croatia national football team in their remaining group matches.
