The eyes of the world are on Birmingham this week, with the opening of the Commonwealth Games. But hopes of blazing sunshine for the event have been dashed – for now.

The Met Office IS forecasting hotter weather for parts of the country by the end of the month. But the immediate forecast for Birmingham shows a cloudy start to the week and into Thursday – launch day for the Games.

On Monday, the odd bright spell is expected, but there will be a lot of cloud giving a few mainly light showers. It will still be a fairly warm start, however, with temperatures reaching 22°C, feeling fresher during the day in the westerly breeze.

Later on, expect one or two showers continuing throughout the evening, but becoming mostly dry overnight with some clear spells. The wind will gradually ease, allowing temperatures to dip more than recently to lows of 10°C.

Most areas will see a lot of fine weather on Tuesday, with some bright or sunny spells. Some showers are likely to develop again with lighter winds. Maximum temperature 22°C.

Largely dry weather is forecast for Wednesday, with light winds and some sunshine after a cool start. A few showers are expected on Thursday and Friday, but becoming a bit warmer again.

On Thursday, the city sees the opening of the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham. The Met Office predicts a cloudy day, but with temperatures still reaching a warm 22C.

On Friday, July 29 north Kent and parts of central London look set to record 30°C highs by 6pm. This will be closely followed by the east where temperatures will sit at around 27°C by the coast and 29°C inland.

By Tuesday, August 2 the south east will begin hotting up again, this time with chances of 30°C being reached across Kent, Sussex and possibly Hampshire. The Wednesday and Thursday following will still see thermometers reach up to 27°C on both days.
