Sports Minister Kofi Adams Endorses Inclusion of Diaspora Players in Black Stars Squad for 2026 World Cup

Minister of Youth and Sports, Kofi Adams, has expressed his full support for the inclusion of Ghanaian footballers in the diaspora as part of the Black Stars squad for the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup, stressing that every Ghanaian player — home or abroad — has a fair chance to represent the nation if selected by the technical team.

His remarks follow Ghana’s 1-0 victory over Comoros at the Accra Sports Stadium, a result that confirmed the Black Stars’ qualification for the global showpiece.

Addressing concerns about the possible influx of foreign-born players ahead of the tournament, Adams, who also serves as the Member of Parliament for the Buem Constituency, emphasized that selection will be based solely on merit and the discretion of the coach.

“Every Ghanaian who knows how to play has the opportunity to go to the World Cup if the coach decides that he wants,” he told Asempa FM.

The Minister acknowledged the quality of several players of Ghanaian descent abroad, including Eddie Nketiah and Callum Hudson-Odoi, noting that while their talent is unquestionable, the final decision rests entirely with the technical team.

He also reaffirmed his commitment to supporting the strengthening of the national team, revealing that he has previously played a role in helping to recruit players for the Black Stars.

“That is my responsibility, and if I am contacted to help, I will. Even some of the players playing now, I did some background work to get them to the national team,” he said.
“It’s not about my party people; I even spoke to those from the opposition just to bring them into the national team. So whoever they want to bring in, I will be there to assist.”

Despite some public criticism labeling diaspora players as “opportunists” for making themselves available only during major tournaments, Adams maintains that Ghana must harness the best talents available, regardless of their location.

Meanwhile, the official draw for the 2026 FIFA World Cup is scheduled for December 5, 2025, at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C.
