“We want to write our own story” — Semenyo targets history with Ghana at 2026 World Cup

With anticipation building ahead of the tournament, Semenyo says the current squad is determined to prove itself on the biggest stage and show the world that Ghana can once again compete among football’s elite nations.

“I think that’s the intention. I feel like we do want to write our own story. We’ve got such a good team, and we just need to prove to the world that we can be up there and compete with everyone else,” Semenyo stated.

The Black Stars head into the tournament looking to bounce back from recent World Cup disappointments after failing to progress beyond the group stage in their last two appearances. However, there is growing belief that this generation can revive memories of Ghana’s famous run at the 2010 World Cup, where they became only the second African nation to reach the quarter-finals.

Semenyo admitted that the immediate objective is to finally get beyond the group phase, but he also hinted that the team is capable of going much further if momentum builds.

“I feel like that’s the only question right now, so once we do that, that’ll be the story written. I don’t want to jinx anything but I think, for me personally, getting through the group stage would be a start for us. I feel like we can go on and do special things,” he added.

Ghana face a difficult challenge in Group L, where they will come up against England national football team, Croatia national football team, and Panama national football team. Despite the quality of the opposition, confidence continues to grow within the Black Stars camp.

Semenyo has emerged as one of Ghana’s most important attacking players following his impressive rise in English football with AFC Bournemouth. His pace, direct style, and eye for goal have made him a key figure for both club and country.

As Ghana prepare for another appearance on football’s grandest stage, Semenyo’s message reflects the ambition running through the squad — a team eager to move beyond past frustrations and create its own legacy at the World Cup.
