Rashford’s Double Inspires Barcelona to Champions League Win at Newcastle
Marcus Rashford announced himself on the Champions League stage for Barcelona with a devastating second-half brace that condemned Newcastle United to defeat in their opening Group Stage clash at St James’ Park.
On loan from Manchester United, Rashford turned tormentor-in-chief against Eddie Howe’s side, breaking open a tense contest with two goals in quick succession.
With England head coach Thomas Tuchel watching on, Rashford rose highest to glance Jules Kounde’s cross beyond Nick Pope after 58 minutes, silencing the raucous Tyneside crowd. Nine minutes later, he struck again in spectacular fashion, unleashing a thunderous 20-yard effort that crashed in off the bar, leaving Pope with no chance. They were his first Champions League goals in nearly four years.
Rashford, who featured in last season’s competition on loan at Aston Villa, delivered one of his finest European displays as he spearheaded Barcelona’s attack in the absence of injured teenage prodigy Lamine Yamal. His tireless performance earned a standing ovation from the travelling supporters when he was substituted with ten minutes remaining.
Newcastle, meanwhile, struggled to gain a foothold. Howe opted to start Anthony Gordon as a makeshift striker, leaving £69m summer signing Nick Woltemade on the bench. Gordon found it difficult to impose himself as Barcelona’s authority grew, with Rashford proving the decisive figure.
The hosts pulled one back deep into stoppage time when Gordon slid home to spark brief hopes of a revival, but Barcelona held firm to claim all three points.
For Newcastle, it was a disappointing start to their campaign; for Rashford, it was a dazzling reminder of his European pedigree.
