Havertz header hands Arsenal slim victory over Burnley in title pursuit

Kai Havertz proved the difference as Arsenal secured a hard-fought victory over Burnley at the Emirates Stadium, keeping the Gunners firmly in the hunt for their first Premier League title in 24 years.

The Gunners dominated possession throughout the opening stages, with Martin Ødegaard dictating play and Bukayo Saka causing problems down the right wing. Burnley’s defensive low block frustrated the Gunners for large periods, limiting clear-cut chances despite Arsenal’s attacking pressure.

The home side’s biggest opportunity came when Leandro Trossard struck the post following a well-worked attacking move. Arsenal continued to create chances, while Burnley occasionally threatened on the counterattack.

A penalty appeal turned down in Burnley’s favour appeared to ignite the Gunners, who eventually found the breakthrough in the 38th minute when Havertz headed home Bukayo Saka’s corner. The goal marked Arsenal’s 26th set-piece goal this season and also saw them score from a set piece in their 19th different Premier League game of the campaign, equalling a league record.

After recess, the league leaders maintained control of possession and territory, keeping Burnley pinned back for long stretches. Burnley’s defensive block held firm and limited clear shots on goal, with Arsenal dominating the ball but struggling to turn that control into real danger.

Much of Arsenal’s attacking threat came from wide areas and deliveries into the box, but Burnley coped well defensively and rarely looked overwhelmed. While the Gunners controlled territory and tempo, they struggled to convert that superiority into significant chances as Burnley held firm to prevent conceding another goal until the final whistle. Mikel Arteta’s side won by a lone goal.

This victory sends the Gunners five points clear at the league summit with 82 points. Manchester City will have a chance to close the gap back to two when they face Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium on Tuesday night before the last round of games.

If Pep Guardiola’s side leave up to that task, the league title will go down to the wire with Arsenal travelling to take on Crystal Palace, needing a win to seal the title while City will host Aston Villa at the Etihad with their destiny depending on the result from London on Sunday.
