Rome Diamond League 2025: Trayvon Bromell sprints away to men’s 100m world lead

Step aside, Kenny Bednarek. Barely five days after the U.S. sprinter set the fastest time this year in the men’s 100m, his compatriot Trayvon Bromell took the crown from him with a storming run at the Golden Gala Pietro Mennea, the Rome Diamond League athletics meet, on Friday (6 June).

Bromell, a two-time Olympian and two-time world bronze medallist, produced his fastest time in the event in over three years to blitz the field in Rome, starting quickly and never looking back to cross the line in 9.84 seconds.

This was the 29-year-old’s fastest legal run since his 9.81 at the U.S. Nationals in June 2022. It was also two hundredths faster than Bednarek’s previous world lead, set at the Philadelphia Grand Slam Track meet.

Bromell’s win was a dominant one. His closest challenger, Emmanuel Eseme of Cameroon, finished a full 0.15 seconds behind in 9.99, with Kenya’s Ferdinand Omanyala third in 10.01.

The 2022 world champion Fred Kerley – with whom Bromell shared the podium in Eugene that year – was down in fifth, in 10.06 after fading quickly around halfway in.
